Hong Kong has suspended imports of poultry meat, eggs, and related products from selected areas in Poland, Sweden, and Japan.
The move follows confirmed outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza, according to the Centre for Food Safety (CFS).
The suspension took effect immediately after disease notifications were issued by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), the Swedish Board of Agriculture, and Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
Outbreak locations identified
The reported outbreaks involve highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Poland’s Kartuzy District (Pomorskie Region) and Poddębice District (Lodzkie Region).
Sweden confirmed a similar outbreak in the Municipality of Hoor.
In Japan, authorities reported a highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza case in Okayama Prefecture.
In response, the CFS instructed the suspension of imports from these areas to safeguard public health.
Trade impact and import volumes
Figures from Hong Kong’s Census and Statistics Department show significant poultry trade with the affected regions.
During the first nine months of 2025, Hong Kong imported:
- Around 1870 tons of frozen poultry meat from Poland
- About 20 tons from Sweden
- Approximately 1540 tons of frozen poultry meat from Japan
- Nearly 219.73 million eggs from Japan
Ongoing monitoring and food safety measures
The CFS said it has contacted authorities in Poland, Sweden, and Japan to follow up on the outbreaks. It will continue monitoring updates from WOAH and national veterinary authorities and adjust import controls as needed.
Hong Kong applies a regionalized approach to poultry import controls, restricting products from affected districts rather than imposing blanket countrywide bans. This method aims to prevent disease spread while maintaining supply stability.
The CFS emphasized that properly handled and thoroughly cooked poultry products remain safe for consumption.
Still, the department urged consumers and traders to stay alert, source from reputable suppliers, and observe strict food safety practices.
The import suspension will remain in force until further notice, pending ongoing assessments and official updates.
