Namibia informed the ban on the import and in-transit movement of live and raw birds, which includes commercial poultry and ostrich products from Argentina and Chile.
- This suspension occurs after Highly Pathogenic Avian Flu is notified in different Latin American countries.
The ban on imports enters fourteen days before the date on which an avian influenza case was confirmed. According to Albertina Shilongo, the Chief Veterinary Officer at Namibian Agriculture Ministry, it indicates that the suspension of poultry imports from Argentina started two weeks before February 24 and on March 10 for Chile.
Ms. Shilongo emphasized, “Consignments containing poultry products packed in their final packaging on or after the date of start of suspension will be rejected and sent back to the country of origin or destroyed at the importer’s cost,” she added that refrigerated trucking containers would be regarded as a consignment, and will be handled as an entity.
