Sinergia Animal Thailand has released its report titled ‘2025 Cage-Free Egg Ranking of Thai Supermarkets’, marking the first comprehensive assessment of 14 leading supermarkets and retail chains in Thailand.
The evaluation examines policies, transparency, commitments, and progress in sourcing cage-free eggs, providing an overview of the current state of Thailand’s retail sector in relation to animal welfare and the sustainability of the food system.
The report is based solely on publicly disclosed information from the companies assessed and aims to raise public awareness, encourage greater business engagement, and foster constructive dialogue on developing sourcing practices that better meet the expectations of modern consumers.
The findings reflect both notable examples of progress and areas where further development remains possible.
Overview of the rankings
The assessment is based on six criteria, with a total possible score of 18 points. The results show that only five of the 14 retailers evaluated have publicly disclosed clear policies or guidelines on sourcing cage-free eggs.
Retailers with standout performance include:
- Sunshine Market, which scored 83% (Grade A), supported by a strong public policy covering all brands and outlets, along with a clearly defined transition timeline.
- Rimping, which achieved 72% (Grade A), reflecting a comprehensive policy and formal public commitment.
- Tops, Makro, and Lotus’s, each scoring 55% (Grade B), demonstrating some progress and partial timelines, while still leaving room to expand coverage and improve transparency in reporting.
Meanwhile, several other retailers were found to have no publicly available policies on cage-free egg sourcing. The report notes that this may reflect initiatives that are still under development or a lack of systematic public communication.
Opportunities to elevate Thailand’s retail standards
Sinergia Animal noted that a significant number of laying hens in Thailand are currently raised in battery cage systems, an issue that is receiving increasing global attention from consumers, investors, and businesses alike.
Several European countries have already phased out battery cages entirely, while many multinational companies have adopted cage-free commitments across their global supply chains.
Saneekan Rassamorn, Managing Director of Sinergia Animal Thailand, said the report aims to present an evidence-based overview of the Thai retail sector and underscore the important role retailers play in shaping a more responsible food market.
She added that the findings also open opportunities for all stakeholders to work together to develop approaches that are appropriate to Thailand’s context.
Carolina Galvani, Executive Director of Sinergia Animal, said cage-free egg sourcing is increasingly becoming a globally recognized practice, driven by expectations from consumers, investors, and regulators.
She added that Thailand’s retail sector has the potential to strengthen its leadership role in Southeast Asia by adopting clear policies aligned with international standards.
Call for constructive industry engagement
Sinergia Animal has called on Thai retailers and convenience store operators to consider developing cage-free egg sourcing policies that align with their individual business contexts, in order to collectively support the transition toward a more sustainable, transparent, and socially responsible food industry in the long term.
