Last January, the United Arab Emirates became the second-largest importer of chicken meat in Brazil, taking the place of Japan, according to data released by ABPA (Brazilian Association of Animal Protein). The ranking changes occurred in the month when Brazil exported a 19.7% greater volume of chicken meat compared to January 2021.

According to information from ABPA, considering all products, between fresh and processed, Brazil exported 349.1 thousand tons of chicken meat last January. In the same period of 2021, the volume of chicken meat exported was 291.6 thousand tons.

In terms of revenue, the result of sales of chicken meat in the first month of 2022 reached US$ 616.9 million, an amount 42% higher than that recorded in January 2021, when US$ 434.4 million were collected from exports. According to the president of ABPA, Ricardo Santin, the international market for poultry products has faced intense pressure from high input costs, reflected in higher prices.

“The rise in protein prices is a global phenomenon,” said Santin. “The average price of Brazilian exports this month was 18.6% higher, which helped to reduce the strong pressure generated by the costs of corn and soybeans, in addition to other inputs that made the Brazilian market more expensive,” he added.

According to the president of ABPA, the positive point is that, even with the highest price, Brazilian chicken meat is still in strong demand. He claims this fact to attributes such as the quality of the products and that Brazil is the only major free exporter of Avian Influenza.
