This Forum brings together scientific leaders from PSA’s allied industry partners to discuss priority research needs and opportunities in the broiler, egg, and turkey industries. Speakers shared perspectives on emerging challenges, funding trends, and innovation gaps specific to their segment of the industry. The session aims to align research opportunities with current industry needs. Attendees gained valuable insight into how PSA and its stakeholders can advance the future of poultry science together.
9:30 AM | Hatchery Business Meeting & Student Workshop: Where can poultry science take you? Career pathways, preparation tips, and profile-building strategies
Graduate students are the future leaders of the poultry industry. However, with so many career pathways available across industry and academia, they must have a clear and practical strategy for planning their professional journey.
- This workshop is designed to guide students through the diverse career opportunities in the poultry sector, what different roles entail, for example, technical sales and services, product development manager, R&D manager, research and extension at academia or government organizations, among others, the responsibilities they will carry in those roles, how they can build profile to fit themselves in those roles, and how to navigate a successful transition from student to early-career professional and continue to excel in the practical life.
- Through real-world experience and actionable advice from respected experts in industry and academia, students will leave better equipped to shape their future with confidence and purpose.
1:00 PM | Presidential Symposium: Precision poultry farming
Diseases continue to significantly impact poultry production. Viruses (avian influenza, Marek’s, Newcastle), bacteria (Salmonella sp., Clostridium sp.), and parasites (Eimeria) are important disease-causing organisms. Some of these organisms affect food safety as well as poultry health. Pathogen evolution complicates the animal’s response against the disease and therapeutic vaccines. Identifying genes that influence disease resistance and understanding their contributions to overall health become more critical as production reduces reliance on antibiotics and other treatments.
