Dr. Bapon: Layer nutrition and egg quality in Bangladesh
aviNews International interviewed Dr. Bapon Dey to talk about Layer nutrition and egg quality in Bangladesh. Dr. Bapon is an assistant professor from the Bangladesh Agriculture University. His research is about poultry feeds and nutrition, value-added egg production, molecular biology, cellular biology, behavioral experiments, western blotting, and immunohistochemistry.
Talking about the current status of the layer industry in Bangladesh, Dr. Bapon explained that this is a developing country and the layer industry is very prominent. This is an industry that is moving pretty fast. There are two types of people controlling the industry, about 50 % is controlled by local farmers, and industrial people control the other 50%.
“So, the eggs that come to the market basically come from the side of the local farmer and also from the industry.” Dr. Bapon continues explaining that there is a problem actually since the industrial side has trained people, skilled graduated, and technical people while local farmers do not have technical training. Therefore local farmers are facing different problems.
In Bangladesh, people can consume 104 eggs per year, but this value should increase to 200. So, the shortage of egg production is around 45%, so this shortage is an opportunity for the industry since eggs are cheap and nutritious. Therefore Bangladesh has great potential in the layer market.
One of the great challenges facing the industry in Bangladesh is that due to geographical conditions, egg production is affected by high relative humidity and temperature, especially in the summer months, reaching temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius, which makes it difficult the management.
Other discussed topics were:
  • Major problems that you are facing in the egg quality
  • What are the strategies to solve those problems?
  • Is there any collaboration between the industry and the university to address those problems?
  • What kind of collaboration do you expect more from these organizations?
  • Tell us about your research focus on layer nutrition.
