The average retail price of a carton of 30 eggs in South Korea has climbed back above USD 4.66 for the first time since late January.
According to the Korea Institute for Animal Products Quality Evaluation on March 13, the average price of 30 eggs stood at USD 4.69 as of March 12, up 16.6% from a year earlier.
Prices hovered in the range of USD 4.46-4.53 earlier this week before jumping back into the USD 4.66 range.
It marks the first time in about a month and a half that egg prices have exceeded USD 4.66 for a carton of 30.
The average retail price of a carton of 10 eggs rose even more sharply to USD 2.60, up 21.1% from a year earlier.
The surge is largely attributed to the continued spread of the highly pathogenic avian influenza, despite additional egg imports from the US.
