Inclusion of whole corn in broiler diets as a strategy to improve feed conversion ratio

Different processes are included in the feed manufacturing for broilers. From all those processes, grinding is one of the most expensive, but at the same time one of the most important. Adequate particle size reduction helps improve mixing uniformity, reduces segregation after mixing and improves pellet quality, among others.

From the physiological standpoint, coarse particles are essential for gizzard stimulation and development. Gizzard grinding contributes to increase digesta surface area, facilitates enzyme activity and increases absorption and digestion. Although coarse particles are preferred by birds, some authors reported that they impair the bodyweight and feed intake and increase the feed conversion ratio in broilers.
