The Agricultural and Livestock Service, SAG, from Chile confirmed the detection of the first case of avian influenza in commercial flocks. This outbreak was found in an industrial poultry farm located in the O'Higgins Region and has affected around 40,000 birds.
After the finding, the SAG activated the existing protocol to prevent the spreading of the disease to other poultry farms. The protocol involves:
- the slaughter of affected birds
- isolation of the area, and
- sanitary measures
The Minister of Agriculture, Esteban Valenzuela, specified that it is "a confirmed case in an Agrosuper campus in the western sector of the Rancagua commune.
Consequently, the SAG has proceeded to control that area and immediately, in addition, complying with the highest standards, the World Organization for Animal Health (OMSA) has been informed and, therefore, the export of poultry meat has been closed."
The measure, taken by the SAG, means the self-suspension of the certification of exports of national poultry products, a decision reported to the OMSA and all its trading partners.
Regarding this, Carlos Orellana, Head of the Livestock Protection Division of the SAG, explained that the measure taken by the service is explained in that "we are seeing now is the affectation of a commercial farm, we are talking about
