Avian flu outbreaks on poultry and wild and captive birds have increased in different zones of England, such as Devon, Cornwall, and parts of Somerset. Therefore, an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has been declared across that region to reduce the risk of future outbreaks.
It implies that from August 31st, poultry producers and bird keepers should follow strict biosecurity measures to help protect their flocks or birds (No matter the type o size). This is a legal requirement for produces from Devon, Cornwall (including the Isles of Scilly), and parts of Somerset.
The regional Avian Influenza Prevention Zone comprises that part of England contained within the red line and consisting of Cornwall, Isles of Scilly, Torridge District, West Devon District (B), Teignbridge District, Torbay (B), City of Plymouth (B), North Devon District, Mid Devon District, East Devon District, Exeter District (B) and Somerset and Taunton District
Following a number of detections of avian influenza we have declared an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone across Cornwall, Devon and parts of Somerset. This means that all bird keepers in the region must take action now to both prevent disease getting in to flocks and it spreading any further, said the UK’s Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer Richard Irvine
The measures to control the spread of the disease to keepers with more than 500 birds are:
- Restrict access for non-essential people on their sites,
- Workers will need to change clothing and footwear before entering bird enclosures, and
