Huai Sai Green Chicken to help spur rural growth in Thailand

Phetchaburi province is promoting the native Huai Sai Green Chicken to help local farmers cut costs, boost incomes, strengthen food security.

Thailand’s Phetchaburi Provincial Livestock Office is promoting the production of the native Huai Sai Green Chicken, a high-quality local breed, as a means to increase income, cut household expenses, and strengthen community-level economic resilience.

Chatchai Yimkhruea, Phetchaburi Provincial Livestock Officer, led a team to Cha-am District to deliver 100 breeding chickens to a local farmers’ group. These chickens will be distributed to 10 members, each receiving 200 birds—a total of 2000 chickens for the community.

To support animal health during the rainy season, the program provides feed, vitamins, and deworming medicine. Farmers also received technical guidance and training in proper animal husbandry from specialists led by Somkhin Hongkhongkha, Acting Head of the Livestock Promotion and Development Division, and Noppadon Phulsak, Livestock Technical Officer.

Local breed with strong potential

The Huai Sai Green Chicken, developed at the Huai Sai Development Study Center, is known for its distinctive appearance and meat quality. A mature male weighs up to 3.5kg, while females average around 2.5kg—larger than typical native chickens. It features unique greenish-black feathers, dark legs, a broad chest, and muscular thighs.

The breed is ideal for free-range farming thanks to its disease resistance and reduced feed costs. Its meat is flavorful and low-fat. Thus, it offers strong market returns: a 3-month-old chick can be sold for USD 1.55, while a fully grown 6-month-old bird can fetch up to USD 3.09.

This initiative can help local farmers earn extra income while boosting food security and supporting community-based economies. It aligns with Thailand’s philosophy of sufficiency economy and promotes sustainable, self-reliant agriculture in rural areas.

“Promoting the Huai Sai Green Chicken breed is a practical solution to enhance the well-being of local farmers, reduce costs, and ensure long-term economic sustainability,” said Dr Chatchai.
