Indonesia is exploring export opportunities for its poultry products to China and the Middle East, according to Sudaryono, Vice Minister of Agriculture.
The initiative aims to expand market access, absorb domestic production surpluses, and improve the welfare of local poultry farmers.
He said the Ministry of Agriculture is expanding access to export markets as a long-term solution to maintain the supply-demand balance, while simultaneously strengthening the global competitiveness of Indonesia’s poultry industry.
Securing export markets, he added, depends not only on business considerations but also on strong diplomatic relations.
Therefore, the government continues to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation to open up more international markets for Indonesian agricultural products.
Improving distribution
Mr Sudaryono revealed that Indonesia’s poultry sector is currently experiencing an oversupply.
However, he sees the abundant supply of live broilers and chicken eggs as a positive indicator of the country’s strong production capacity.
“The government’s main challenge is to improve distribution of the commodities and maintain balance in the domestic market,” he said.
“This is actually a good problem to have. The products are readily available. It is just a matter of how we manage supply, demand, and distribution to ensure stocks are distributed evenly across the country.”
MBG to help absorb the surplus
In another development, the ministry is coordinating closely with the National Nutrition Agency to ensure that the government’s free nutritious meal (Makan Bergizi Gratis or MBG) program maximizes the absorption of domestic food commodities, particularly chicken meat and chicken eggs, whenever farm-gate prices decline.
I Gusti Ketut Astawa, Deputy for Food Availability and Stabilization at the National Food Agency, said the average farm-gate price of broilers has increased by 4.11% over the past week.
Based on the agency’s data as of July 14, the national average price for live broilers stood at USD 1.21/kg, up from USD 1.16/kg the previous week.
