Leading representatives from India’s poultry sector and government officials convened in New Delhi to discuss improving the estimation of meat and egg production and enhancing the quality of industry data through the formation of an expert group.
The meeting brought together Suresh Chitturi, Chairman and Managing Director of Srinivasa Farms, along with Ranpal Dhanda, President of the Poultry Federation of India (PFI); Saurabh Gupta, Executive Member of PFI; Dr Sujit Kumar Dutta, Joint Commissioner; and Dr Harsha Shetty.
A key focus of the discussions was the need for more accurate and comprehensive data on India’s breeder, layer, and broiler populations. Representatives of PFI emphasized that reliable population data is critical for improving estimates of feed requirements, supporting industry planning, and enabling evidence-based policymaking.
Participants also discussed the challenges posed by rising prices of soybean de-oiled cake (DOC), a major protein source in poultry feed. The increase in feed ingredient costs continues to place pressure on poultry farmers and impacts the overall competitiveness and sustainability of the sector.
The proposed expert group is expected to contribute to strengthening data collection, analysis, and reporting mechanisms, helping policymakers and industry stakeholders make informed decisions based on accurate production and population metrics.
India is one of the world’s largest producers of eggs and poultry meat, making robust industry statistics increasingly important for forecasting demand, ensuring food security, and supporting sustainable sector growth.
Industry leaders noted that collaborative engagement between government authorities, poultry organizations, and private-sector stakeholders is essential for addressing emerging challenges and building resilience across the poultry value chain.
The meeting reflects ongoing efforts to enhance transparency, improve production estimates, and strengthen the foundations for future growth of India’s poultry industry.
