Paraguay has secured access to the Taiwanese market for chicken exports, expanding its presence in one of Asia’s key destinations for the country’s meat sector, according to official statement from the government of Paraguay.
The approval was confirmed during a recent meeting between Paraguayan President Santiago Peña and Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te.
With the decision, Paraguay now has access to Taiwan for its three main meat categories, adding poultry to existing pork exports and further diversifying its agriculture export relationship with the Asian country.
Taiwan’s poultry import market
According to information released by Taiwan’s Embassy in Paraguay, the Taiwanese poultry import market represents about 200,000 tons/year, with an estimated value of USD 340 million. Until now, access had been limited to suppliers from a small number of US states, with Paraguay now joining that group.
The move comes as Taiwan has already become a relevant market for Paraguayan pork. Since zero tariffs on Paraguayan pork took effect in July 2025, more than 85% of Paraguay’s pork exports have been directed to Taiwanese consumers, helping turn pork into the country’s fastest-growing meat segment.
Expansion of production capacity
For poultry, annual export potential has been estimated at around USD 15 million. Paraguay’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock has been promoting chicken production among small producers while also supporting new investment in the sector.
Among the projects cited is an investment plan by Pluma, which intends to invest USD 50 million in Yhú, in the department of Caaguazú, as Paraguay looks to expand production capacity and strengthen its position in export markets.
