Thailand still reviewing China’s poultry export request

The Department of Livestock Development says China’s poultry request is under review, with scientific checks required before any decision on imports can be made.

Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development (DLD) has clarified recent media reports about China’s poultry exports. Officials stressed that China has only applied to enter the Thai market. The application is under review and no import approval has been granted.

The DLD confirmed it received the request from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) on January 27, 2026. Filed through Thailand’s Office of Agricultural Affairs in Beijing, the application seeks approval to export frozen poultry meat, cooked products, and byproducts including chicken and goose livers.

Standard trade procedures and risk checks

The department explained that such requests follow international trade rules under the World Trade Organization. These rules promote fair and non‑discriminatory access among trading partners.

Thailand has asked GACC for scientific and technical data to support a full risk assessment. The evaluation covers the entire poultry production chain and follows both Thai regulations and international Sanitary and Phytosanitary standards. Reviews include document checks and on‑site inspections by DLD experts.

No decision yet on imports

The DLD emphasized that the process remains at an early stage. Approval cannot be considered until several rounds of scientific evaluation are complete. These focus on animal disease risks, including avian influenza, and food safety concerns such as chemical veterinary drug residues that could affect both livestock and consumers.

Thailand’s poultry industry is among the world’s strongest. In 2025, the country produced 3.82 million tons of poultry products and exported 1.34 million tons. Export earnings reached more than USD 5 billion (USD 1:THB 33.6).

The DLD and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives added that even if assessments are favorable, the proposal must undergo consultations with farmers, cooperatives, industry groups, and government agencies. Final decisions will rest on scientific evidence, international standards, and the interests of Thai farmers and consumers.
