UK farmers urged to insure against Bird Flu
As the UK braces for another high-risk season of avian influenza, poultry farmers are being strongly encouraged to secure insurance coverage to protect their operations.
As the UK braces for another high-risk season of avian influenza, poultry farmers are being strongly encouraged to secure insurance coverage to protect their operations. With a noticeable rise in outbreaks across the country, the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and NFU Mutual have reopened a limited window for farmers to apply for avian influenza insurance, which will close on 1 September 2025.
NFU Mutual, one of the few insurers still offering this type of coverage, has emphasized the urgency of the situation. “To maintain the sustainability and viability of our avian influenza insurance offering, we reopened general new business outside our scheme for the first time in three years,” said Adam Williams, NFU Mutual’s animal disease portfolio manager.
The call to action comes amid growing concern over the financial vulnerability of poultry producers. James Mottershead, chair of the NFU Poultry Board, warned that the UK is entering a critical period. “As the risk of avian influenza ramps up, so does the vital need to ensure adequate insurance cover and protection,” he stated.
- The insurance policies are designed to help farmers recover from the devastating impacts of outbreaks, which often result in mass culling, production halts, and significant financial losses.
- While government compensation exists, it may not fully cover the market value of lost birds or the costs of restarting operations.
In addition to insurance, organizations like RSPCA Assured are offering support and guidance to farmers. They have adapted their assessment protocols to accommodate farms within avian influenza control zones and are promoting enhanced biosecurity and welfare measures. These include the use of foot dips, PPE, and enrichment strategies to maintain bird welfare during housing orders.
- The NFU and RSPCA Assured are also urging producers to develop contingency plans and stay informed through official channels.
- Farmers affected or seeking advice are encouraged to contact NFU CallFirst or consult the RSPCA Assured website for detailed guidance.
With the insurance application deadline fast approaching and the threat of avian influenza looming, UK poultry farmers are being reminded that proactive planning and financial protection are essential tools for navigating the challenges ahead.
