Chickens and hens manure can be used as an alternative to urea, a fertilizer, which price is high due to the conflict. Every crisis brings opportunity, even the war in Ukraine. To show what is happening with egg and chicken producers in Colombia who are selling impressive amounts of excrement/manure from their poultry houses as fertilizer and are even opening the doors to new markets.
There are concerns about the consequences of that war on the supply of urea, a fertilizer that Colombia today buys from Russia and Belarus. With the conflict, this product increased price and has farmers looking for alternatives such as chicken manure and poultry manure.
The sale of both items has doubled since the beginning of the invasion, said Gonzalo Moreno, President of FENAVI (The National Federation of Poultry Farmers of Colombia). “What we see is in some regions of the country, even some poultry farmers tell us that they do not have enough chicken manure, something that did not happen,” Moreno added.
Colombia could produce about two million tons of chicken manure and poultry manure per year, products that have about 2% nitrogen.
The war also drives Colombian chicken to “fly” to new markets. For example, FENAVI is already in contact with countries in the Middle East interested in buying to replace the chicken they purchased from Ukraine until very recently. The process could take a while, but the paperwork to obtain the sanitary approvals has already started.
