What is the importance of Salmonella diagnosis in poultry?

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause death in birds. Therefore, it is very important to diagnose it. In particular, about those birds that are in the backyard where they often die.

The diagnosis of Salmonella in birds is of vital importance, as reported by the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Dante Javier Bueno, in charge of Bacteriology and Mycology at the Avian Health Laboratory, Department of Poultry, INTA Concepción del Uruguay, National Institute of Agricultural Technology, Argentina.

What is Salmonella?

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause death in birds. Therefore, it is very important to diagnose it. Particularly when it comes to birds that are kept in the backyard as they often die, and common sense would make one think of different causes for this. One of the causes that must be ruled out is the presence of Salmonella.

Salmonella, which can cause mortality, can sometimes remain in carrier animals for life. Then, the control is complicated. Therefore, it is very important to be able to diagnose and know what is the cause of death of the birds.

By knowing the cause, actions can be taken to correct and prevent salmonellosis.  The bacterium can remain in the environment and cause infection in other birds which are in close contact and in those that will be added in the future.

How to make the diagnosis?

To carry out the diagnosis, it is not necessary to sacrifice the animal, but rather to send a sample of the dead birds, a leg or part of it, to the laboratory. Up to 5 legs per group of dead birds is fine. The sample must be refrigerated, not frozen, in a cooler.

At this point, Dr. Bueno highlights, in the INTA publication, that in the case of this laboratory, they have received samples from different parts of Argentina. That is because the leg is a sample that, if sent by express service, keeps well preserved with refrigerants for its future processing. Even on long trips. From there, in this room it is analyzed and confirmed and, if necessary, a study of sensitivity to different antibiotics is performed to explore the possibility of any treatment.

On the other hand, Dante Bueno indicates that if there is bird mortality, he considers it important to
