Researchers at the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station from the University of Arkansas are studying the application of hyperspectral images to detect wooden breast, which is a severe pathology with high losses for the poultry industry.
One of the lead professors of this experiment, Dongyi Wang, an assistant professor of biological and agricultural engineering, said that hyperspectral imaging is a good method for finding wooden breast since it is a non-invasive sensing technique.
Besides, it combines a near-infrared sensor with a high-definition color camera that aims to capture physical and chemical information from the chicken breast in a few seconds. This is different from evaluating by hand, which takes more time.
