Extending the Productive Lifespan of Laying Hens: Challenges for Producers and the Role of AO-Biotics® EQE

Postbiotics are a class of scientifically supported additives that enhance these mechanisms. AO-Biotics® EQE, formulated for laying hens, offers a targeted solution.

Extending the productive life of laying hens is a pivotal objective for modern egg producers:

  • Longer cycles reduce replacement costs, lower carbon footprint per egg, and improve resource efficiency.
  • Yet biological constraints, declining gut integrity, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and skeletal degeneration limit persistency beyond conventional cycles.
  • Postbiotics (non-viable microbial products and metabolites) provide a novel nutritional tool to support gut resilience and immune balance.

AO-Biotics® EQE, an Aspergillus oryzae- derived postbiotic formulated specifically for layers, shows promise in maintaining egg production, egg mass, and shell quality for a longer stage of the cycle when included in the diet continuously from laying until the end of the laying period. Here, we review the industry challenge, current mitigation strategies, mechanisms by which postbiotics act, and the evidence supporting EQE as a practical intervention.

Industry Challenge: Why Extend the Cycle?

Traditionally, commercial laying cycles have ended at 72–80 weeks; however, economic and sustainability drivers now encourage producers to maintain flocks to 90–100 weeks or longer. Extending cycles reduces the number of pullet replacements required per produced egg and lowers feed, housing, and carbon cost per unit of production. Achieving this requires preserving both quantitative production (daily egg production) and qualitative traits (egg mass, shell strength) across an extended physiological load.

However, several interacting physiological processes limit lifespan extension:

To reduce the influence of these challenges, producers have implemented various practices, including phase feeding, targeted antioxidant supplementation, and improved rearing. These measures help, but often treat consequences rather than reinforcing baseline resilience. Therefore, the inclusion of additives such as postbiotics as a preventive tool can contribute to improving the productivity of the animals along their lifespan.

Postbiotics: Definition and Mechanisms

Continue after advertising.

Postbiotics are defined as inanimate microbial cells, cell constituents, and metabolites that confer health benefits. Unlike probiotics, they deliver stable bioactive molecules (short-chain fatty acids, peptides, polysaccharides, enzymes, antioxidants) that modulate the gut microbiota, mucosal barrier, and immune signaling. A novel additive within this category of postbiotics is AO-Biotics® EQE.

AO-Biotics® EQE is an Aspergillus oryzae-derived postbiotic developed by BioZyme Inc. specifically for laying hens. EQE is manufactured using a patented process,  leveraging fermentation and downstream processes that yield a unique profile of metabolites. Inclusion at recommended dosages delivered improvements in sellable egg numbers, egg mass, and prolongation of productive life in controlled and commercial conditions.

Supporting laying hens from the beginning with EQE also represents an economic advantage for the producer. These economic benefits include increased sellable eggs, improved shell quality, and potential feedefficiency gains, which will improve producers’ ROI.

In summary, to extend the lifespan of laying hens, it is necessary to strengthen their gut resilience and immune balance. Postbiotics are a class of scientifically supported additives that enhance these mechanisms. AO-Biotics® EQE, formulated for laying hens, offers a targeted solution. When introduced from the start of laying and administered continuously, EQE can contribute to longer laying persistence, increased egg mass, and improved shell quality throughout the production cycle.
