Latin American poultry farming: a pillar of global chicken production

Mexico stands out as a major player, processing 3.8 million tons of chicken meat in 2023, securing its position as the second-largest regional processor. However, Brazil takes the top spot, with an impressive 14.8 million tons produced in the same period. Brazil remains the only territory in the region with eight-figure production volumes.

Growth trajectory

Over the past decade, Latin American chicken production has experienced remarkable growth, expanding by more than 20%. In 2010, the region produced 20.9 million tons of chicken meat, and since then, its contribution has steadily increased. This growth has a direct impact on per capita consumption, which averages around 38 kilograms annually in Latin America. Notably, Trinidad and Tobago leads the pack with 61 kilograms per person, while Mexico ranks twelfth at 34.8 kilograms.

Nutritional value and affordability

Chicken meat offers a balanced nutritional profile. It is low in fat and high in protein, providing up to 30 grams of protein per 100 grams consumed. Moreover, chicken remains cost-effective compared to other meats like pork and beef, making it accessible to diverse populations. Its versatility allows for a wide range of culinary preparations, contributing to its popularity in Latin American households.

Celebrating chicken

As part of the Latin American Chicken Meat Day celebrations, the National Poultry Institute (INA) organized a webinar titled “Let’s Talk Chicken.” During this event, Angela Kimura, an INA advisor, emphasized the nutritional value of chicken meat within a balanced diet. With Latin America’s continued growth in poultry production, chicken remains a vital protein source for millions of people across the region.
