Preparing to celebrate the International Year of Rural Women.

In recognition of their invaluable work, the United Nations has designated 2026 as the International Year of Rural Women.

Recognizing the vital role of rural women

Did you know that women play a crucial role in global food production? Approximately half of the world’s agricultural workforce consists of women, and their contributions are essential for ensuring global food security. In recognition of their invaluable work, the United Nations has designated 2026 as the International Year of Rural Women.

The resolution, proposed by the United States of America and adopted by consensus, invites FAO, in collaboration with other Rome-based UN agencies, to facilitate the implementation and celebration of the International Year of Rural Women.

Why celebrate rural women?

  1. Food security: Rural women are at the forefront of food production, from planting and harvesting crops to raising livestock. Their efforts directly impact the availability and accessibility of nutritious food for communities worldwide.
  2. Sustainable agriculture: Women often practice sustainable farming techniques, preserving natural resources and promoting biodiversity. Their knowledge of traditional farming practices contributes to resilient and environmentally friendly agriculture.
  3. Economic empowerment: Empowering rural women economically leads to stronger communities. When women have access to resources, education, and markets, they can improve their livelihoods and invest in their families’ well-being.

Challenges faced by rural women

Despite their critical role, rural women encounter various challenges:

  1. Gender inequality: Women face unequal access to land, credit, and decision-making power. Addressing these disparities is essential for achieving gender equality.
  2. Unpaid labor: Women often perform unpaid household and caregiving work, limiting their time and energy for income-generating activities.
  3. Climate change: Rural women are disproportionately affected by climate change due to their dependence on agriculture. Supporting climate-resilient practices is crucial.

Strategies for empowerment

  1. Education and training: Providing education and training opportunities for rural women enhances their skills and knowledge. This includes agricultural techniques, financial literacy, and leadership development.
  2. Access to resources: Ensuring equal access to land, credit, and technology empowers women to participate fully in agricultural activities.
  3. Legal reforms: Advocating for legal reforms that recognize women’s land rights and protect them from discrimination is essential.
