Industry observers say the trend reflects broader changes in consumer behavior. Freshness, provenance, and sustainability now rival price as key purchase drivers.
Why free-range appeals
The appeal of free-range poultry goes beyond health. Many consumers cite better taste, cleaner production methods, and higher animal welfare standards as reasons for switching.
Traceability also matters. Knowing where and how poultry is raised reassures buyers about food safety and quality.
Retailers are responding by diversifying supply chains and sourcing from countries known for open-range and pasture-based farming systems.
These products are marketed as raised in natural environments, with limited antibiotic use and balanced, grain-free diets. Such practices are believed to enhance meat texture, flavor, and nutritional value.

Free-range chicken is more expensive than conventionally farmed poultry, but many consumers see the premium as a worthwhile investment in health and ethical consumption.
