The guards of a century: 100 years with Newcastle disease

The seminar brought in around 100 participants from 15 countries to Bogor.

The first day of Ceva Animal Health’s seminar of commemorating 100 years since Newcastle disease (ND) was first described on the island of Java, was a success.

Moderated by Mustafa Seckin Sandikli, Global Poultry Director and Christophe Cazaban, Poultry Scientific Director, the seminar brought in around 100 participants from 15 countries to Bogor.

The first day was like a journey – the participants had the opportunity to learn the history and current situation of the disease in Indonesia, the UK and the US from the experts.

Dr Hendra Wibawa, Animal Health Director at the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health of Indonesia’s Agriculture Ministry, explained the history of ND in Indonesia, from the first discovery to early vaccine development and virus characterization phases.

He also revealed challenges to control ND and strategies of the government, in collaboration with the private sector and other stakeholders, to control the disease.

The ‘ND history learning journey’ then continued to the UK. For this part, Prof Ian Brown, the Avian Virology Group Leader at the Pirbright Institute in the UK described TM Doyle’s very first reports of a ‘new’ disease in the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in Northeastern England.

He also told participants the long history of scientific research and advances about Newcastle disease at Weybridge, providing a global perspective on the control of the disease 100 years on from its discovery.

The ‘journey’ then continued to the US. For his turn, delivered online, Dr Kiril Dimitrov, Associate Director at the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, reviewed the challenges of ND virus classification and the way towards a unified nomenclature that no one is questioning today.

The unified classification system is facilitating future studies of ND virus evolution and epidemiology, and comparison of results obtained across the world.

The presentation session was ended with a Q&A session receiving many thought-provoking questions from the audience.
