Vietnam’s Long An aims for over 80% vaccination rate against AI, FMD

On May 9, Vice Chairman of Vietnam’s Long An Provincial People’s Committee, Nguyen Minh Lam, instructed local authorities to urgently implement synchronized and decisive disease control measures.

He emphasized that the province must ensure vaccination rates for avian influenza (AI) and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) exceed 80% of the total livestock population.

Since early 2025, livestock diseases in Long An have shown complex developments. According to the Provincial Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sub-Department, African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks in 21 households forced the culling of 738 pigs, while an AI outbreak resulted in 2,200 poultry being culled.

In response, Mr Lam ordered intensified disease surveillance, stricter control of animal transport and trade, and harsh penalties for illegal disposal of animal carcasses that threaten environmental and public health.

Border control: A key line of defense against disease spread

Given Long An’s shared border with Cambodia—characterized by numerous informal crossings and trails—tightening control over the movement of animals and livestock products through these routes is seen as critical to preventing external disease incursions.

Mr Lam stressed the importance of expanding these control measures to all border routes, trails, informal crossings, and waterways to safeguard the province.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has warned that ASF and AI remain serious threats to Vietnam’s livestock sector, especially in the Mekong Delta, as the rainy season approaches.
