Cobb-Vantress New Zealand gains first poultry compartment status

The landmark status aligns with WOAH standards, protecting poultry trade and setting a new benchmark for New Zealand’s agricultural sector.

Cobb‑Vantress New Zealand (CVNZ), a subsidiary of Cobb-Vantress LLC, has become the first organization in New Zealand to receive formal poultry compartment status from the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

This landmark approval followed a rigorous evaluation process. It ensures CVNZ can continue exporting broiler breeding stock to countries that recognize compartment status, even during national disease outbreaks such as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) or Newcastle disease (ND).

Scope and standards of the compartment

The compartment covers CVNZ’s rearing, production farms, and hatchery operations. It applies to:

HPAI
Low pathogenicity avian influenza (LPAI)
ND
Salmonella ser. Gallinarum var. Pullorum
Salmonella ser. Gallinarum var. Gallinarum

The designation reassures trading partners and customers that strict biosecurity, surveillance, and management systems are firmly in place.

Setting a national benchmark

CVNZ’s approval marks the first poultry compartmentalization in New Zealand. It establishes a new benchmark for biosecurity and export resilience in the country’s poultry sector.

Compartmentalization maintains trade continuity through tightly controlled biosecurity systems rather than relying solely on regional or national disease status. This approach aligns with World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) standards and addresses rising global disease risks.

Protecting customers and global supply

For CVNZ customers, the new status provides assurance of continuity of supply, even during disease events that might otherwise disrupt international trade.

“Compartment status allows us to better help protect our customers, by safeguarding genetic supply chains, and maintaining business continuity under challenging conditions,” added Mr Mutimer.

“It reinforces Cobb‑Vantress’ long‑term commitment to New Zealand, our people, and our global customers.”

Ongoing verification will be conducted by AsureQuality Limited, ensuring compliance with MPI requirements and robust oversight of all approved operations.

Cobb‑Vantress anticipates importing countries will recognize the CVNZ compartment and adjust import conditions accordingly.
