A new halal poultry processing plant to rise in Legazpi City will help boost food supply and tourism in the Philippines’ Bicol region.
Worth around USD 1.6 million, the facility aims to serve the growing demand for halal-certified products across the region, and stimulate halal tourism and restaurant development.
Infrastructure and economic inclusion
Construction is expected to begin in July, said Emmanuel Estipona, who heads the City Veterinary Office (CVO). The facility will initially process 1000 birds, with plans to expand to livestock later.
Dr Estipona stressed that the plant will adhere strictly to halal standards, addressing long-standing gaps in access to affordable and reliable halal poultry dressing services.
The project is CVO collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Agriculture, aiming to promote food safety, support local farmers, and foster inclusive economic growth.
Strengthening national and food security
Dr Estipona highlighted the project’s dual impact: enhancing national and food security by addressing the needs of Muslim communities.
“We aim to enhance food security because halal is not exclusively for Muslims,” he said, adding that the DTI is developing a promotional strategy to broaden public awareness.
Beyond its religious significance, halal-processed poultry is expected to drive local economic growth and benefit nearby communities, positioning Legazpi City as a center for inclusive regional development.
