Timor-Leste is placing poultry and eggs at the center of its trade expansion with Malaysia as the Southeast Asian nation works to strengthen food security and integrate into the ASEAN economy.
According to Sidonio Trindade de Costa Freitas, Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Timor-Leste in charge of ASEAN and WTO Affairs, demand for Malaysian consumer goods is growing rapidly—particularly eggs and poultry. These products were previously imported mainly from Brazil, but Malaysia’s geographic proximity and new direct air connectivity between Kuala Lumpur and Dili are creating opportunities for more reliable supply.
“Almost every weekend we see visitors arriving from Malaysia to explore opportunities here,” said Mr Freitas. He noted that Batik Air’s direct route is already supporting people-to-people exchanges and business cooperation.
Modernization
Timor-Leste’s pivot toward Malaysia reflects the government’s wider push to modernize agriculture and diversify food imports. While rice, corn, cassava, and coffee remain central to domestic farming, poultry meat and eggs are increasingly essential to meeting local protein demand.
Industry observers note that securing a consistent supply of fresh, high-quality poultry products will be crucial to reducing reliance on distant exporters and lowering costs for Timorese consumers.
Malaysia, already a leading poultry and egg producer in ASEAN, is well positioned to fill this gap. Strong veterinary infrastructure, halal certification standards, and established export systems make Malaysian poultry producers attractive partners.
For Timor-Leste, importing from Malaysia not only ensures freshness but also supports closer integration with regional supply chains.
Continuing dialogue
Mr Freitas added that continuous dialogue, product certification, and recognition of origin will be key to building confidence among Malaysian small and medium enterprises looking at the Timorese market.
With ASEAN membership on the horizon, Timor-Leste sees poultry and eggs as strategic imports that can stabilize its food system while opening the door for broader agricultural cooperation with Malaysia.
