While African swine fever continues to depress pork prices, Vietnam’s poultry prices, particularly for chicken meat, are seeing a sharp rebound.
Over the past month, chicken prices have continuously climbed, reaching the highest levels in a year.
Relief after long slump
In Nghe An province, Nguyen Huy Hoang sold over 1000 chickens just as prices surged, bringing much-needed relief.
He shared that from late 2024 to mid-2025, chicken prices bottomed out, forcing farmers like him to absorb heavy losses while struggling to maintain their flocks.
Small traders at traditional markets attribute the rise to a sudden surge in consumer demand.
On average, chicken prices have increased by USD 0.42 to USD 0.63/kg, with free-range chickens raised by small households now the top choice among consumers.
The price rebound has encouraged many farmers to restock. However, authorities advise producers to monitor market trends and adjust production plans to avoid oversupply and future price volatility.
Currently, free-range chicken prices range from USD 4.20-6.25/kg, depending on the type and region.
Meanwhile, prices of industrial broilers chicken currently costs USD 1.67-2.00/kg, up about USD 0.42-0.50 from last month.
Industry experts believe prices may continue rising if strong demand persists. However, they warn against excessive restocking without clear market signals to minimize risks.
