Mexico is being highly impacted by the avian influenza virus. So far, 852,000 birds (0.04% of the domestic inventory) have been culled to control the disease’s spread. Recently, the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety, and Quality (Senasica) and the National Union of Poultry Producers (UNA) indicated that ending this week, the vaccination against the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) will start.
The purpose of the vaccination is to reduce the impact of avian flu in poultry operations.
The vaccination will start based on a strategic plan designed by the General Direction of Animal Health (DGSA Spanish abbreviation) from Senasica. During the first vaccination step, the birds in high-risk zones will be vaccinated and protect the broiler breeders and parent stock to guarantee a future supply of chickens.
The effectiveness tests of the vaccines currently produced in Mexico were carried out in reference laboratories of the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) in other countries, for which the effectiveness of the available biologicals is considered.
While the vaccination happens, different poultry associations are working closely to keep the supply of chicken and eggs in the country market. So far, the supply of these products has not been affected.
