Authorities from the border between Mexico and the United States of America informed that U.S. citizens are smuggling eggs and other poultry products from Mexico to the U.S. due to the price increase in those products.
With the opportunity to cross to Mexico, American citizens can buy 30 eggs for only $3.40, while in their country, the same amount costs $8. Consequently, raw egg seizures in the United States have increased by 108%.
The director of field operations for Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in San Diego, Jennifer De La O, indicated in a post that “the agency has registered a notable increase in the number of eggs seized at ports of entry to the United States.”
“The San Diego Field Office has recently noted an increase in the number of eggs intercepted at our ports of entry. As a reminder, the entry of raw eggs from Mexico to the US is prohibited. Failing to declare agricultural items can result in fines of up to $10,000,” Twitter post.
Thus, officers from the CPB encourage people to declare all agricultural products to avoid penalties. Travelers should not attempt to bring fruits, vegetables, or meats into the U.S. without first confirming that they are permitted.
