Egg prices in the United States have been increasing during the last months due to the low demand caused by avian flu and the influence of feed ingredient costs. However, new data indicated that the cost of eggs decreased to record levels in February, which could allow for predicting that prices will have a significant fall in 2023. Still, it is controversial due to the current avian flu impact and inflation effects.
In February, the price of a dozen eggs was around $4.21, which represents a drop of 13 percent compared to the $4.82 for January.
In a presentation at the annual USDA Agricultural Outlook Forum last month, Seth Meyer, USDA Chief Economist, said that “wholesale egg prices are projected to fall nearly 30% in 2023. If that prediction holds, it would put the average price nationwide at about $2.07.”
According to CNBC, consumer prices appear to follow wholesale price trends. For example, wholesale egg prices, which grocery stores and other retailers pay egg suppliers, plunged in January and February.
Yet retail prices are still up 55% from a year earlier, according to CPI data, one of the most significant percentage increases of any consumer good or service.
