Malaysia’s transition toward cage-free egg production took a major step forward at the Malaysia Cage-Free Corporate Implementation Progress Forum & Industry Leadership Awards 2025, jointly organized by Humane World for Animals and the Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producers’ Organisation (MCFEPO).
The event brought together policymakers, producers, and corporate buyers to evaluate Malaysia’s progress toward ethical, sustainable, and welfare-driven egg production systems.
Policy support and industry alignment
Veteran Malaysian social advocate known for his long-standing work in public welfare, Lee Lam Thye delivered a keynote address highlighting that animal welfare, sustainability, and empathy must now form the foundation of modern food production.
He noted that consumer expectations and corporate social responsibility goals are accelerating the shift to cage-free systems that deliver both food safety and humane standards.
Meanwhile, Norazman Ayob, Deputy Secretary-General (Policy) at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, reaffirmed that “food security is national security.”
He emphasized that the National Food Security Policy 2030 focuses on creating a sustainable, inclusive, and efficient agriculture sector capable of supporting long-term resilience and market stability.
New guidelines and education initiatives launched
A key milestone of the forum was the launch of Malaysia’s Cage-Free Rearing Guidelines, developed in consultation with veterinarians, poultry specialists, and egg producers.
These guidelines provide a framework for farmers transitioning to cage-free systems, ensuring compliance with both local and international standards.
Several memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were also signed with progressive farms such as Teong Choon Poultry Farm, which will serve as a Centre of Excellence for cage-free education and training.
These partnerships aim to equip farmers with technical expertise and promote best practices in welfare management and audit readiness.
Recognizing leadership and innovation
The event concluded with the Industry Leadership Awards, celebrating companies and establishments such as Huat Lai Resources, Big Dutchman, Grand Hyatt, Mandarine Oriental Hotel, Liang Kee Farming, KLCC, Agrobank, and individuals championing sustainability and innovation within the egg sector.
Malaysia’s continued progress signals its growing role as a regional model for humane and sustainable poultry production, aligning economic growth with ethical responsibility.
