Vietnam surges ahead in EU poultry imports

At a Ho Chi Minh City event under the campaign ‘European poultry – From farm to fork’, EU poultry representative Dariusz Goszczyński emphasized Vietnam’s growing importance as a strategic market in Asia. 

Poland leads supply growth

Poland is currently the largest exporter of poultry to Vietnam, shipping over 37,300 tons last year. It is followed by France (around 4900 tons), Hungary (4680 tons), Italy (2750 tons), and the Netherlands (2170 tons).

After declining during the COVID-19 period (2021-2022), when imports hovered around 30,000 tons annually, the market has rebounded strongly since 2023, with volumes nearly doubling.

Piotr Harasimowicz of the Polish Investment and Trade Agency in Vietnam noted that local consumers increasingly trust European poultry products, which are produced under strict quality and safety standards.

Expanding consumption trends

Vietnam’s poultry consumption continues to rise. Data from Agro Monitor shows shows chicken’s share in the national food basket grew from 29% in 2022 to 33% in 2024.

Egg consumption also climbed to an average of 198 eggs per person per year. While this remains below the global average of 250–300 eggs, the gap signals significant room for growth.

These figures highlight Vietnam’s expanding appetite for poultry and eggs, creating opportunities for both domestic producers and international exporters. Exports from Poland to Vietnam alone are expected to reach up to 45,000 tons annually.

With consumption rising and trade ties deepening, Vietnam is set to remain one of Asia’s most promising poultry markets. Strong demand is expected to sustain import growth in the years ahead.
