Thailand has secured approval to export raw chicken and duck meat to the Philippines for the first time, marking a new chapter in agricultural trade between the two countries and creating fresh opportunities for Thai farmers.
The agreement follows a February meeting between Thailand’s Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Narumon Pinyosinwat, and Philippine Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr, where both officials discussed expanding trade in agricultural products, particularly poultry.
Previously, only cooked chicken from Thailand was permitted in the Philippine market. Now, the Philippine Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) has approved Bangkok Ranch (EST. 14) and Panus Poultry (EST. 79) to begin exporting raw poultry products.
Next step for exports
The final requirement is the approval of a health certificate for raw poultry, which is currently under review. Once confirmed, exports can begin immediately.
“This is a significant step forward,” said Mr Narumon. “The raw poultry market in the Philippines is much larger than the cooked segment, and Thai producers are now well positioned to compete.”
Economic impact
Initial exports from the two approved plants are expected to reach 5000 tons annually, valued at around USD 13.5 million.
As more processing plants gain approval, Thailand could potentially capture up to 25% of the Philippines’ raw poultry import market which could be worth billions of baht.
According to Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development, the move is expected to significantly boost Thailand’s poultry export sector while enhancing income opportunities for farmers across the country.
